Along those lines\u2026<\/strong> <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe map, then, not only precedes the journey, it also replaces it\u2026much of this mapping of the world in advance of our experience of it has meant the substitution of quantitative measures for the world\u2019s qualities. It has meant the projection of a world without qualities. In a delightful reference to maps, McLuhan points out a specific consequence of this situation: \u2018The things that hurt one do not show on a map.\u2019<\/em> [1] <\/sup><\/em><\/strong> And neither do the things that delight.” <\/em>[2] <\/sup><\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had no plan mapped out for my\nphotographic work for Wild Spirits, Warm Hearts. I am interested in people and\nidentified my journey part way through by a chance encounter with a\nparticularly kindhearted local at an isolated small farm house near\nthe Yellow River,  an experience that has\nimpressed me for life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without let, she opened her home to us,\nallowing us to photograph. We all entered with due respect. On our visit, \u2018her\nlife\u2019 included a sick, bedridden husband, whom I was reluctant to photograph\nbut given her insistence I did; realizing I was photographing an incredibly\nbrave and plucky soul facing final days. Only the best of us, who instinctively\nunderstand our humanity, can accept death with such equanimity, grace and\ndignity. \n\nMy experience of making this portrait inspired me for\nthe rest of our trip and beyond. It challenged me to capture in an image the\ntriumph of kindness shown by locals who rarely have much in the way of material\npossessions, but who are rich in love and trust of others, and we are fortunate\nto encounter on our way. \n\n\n\n  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
